Minimally Invasive Vascular Angioplasty & Stenting

Angioplasty and stenting are performed to unblock a clogged artery. A minimally invasive approach is most appropriate when the diseased portion of the artery is relatively small and easily accessible with a catheter.

This out-patient procedure usually requires only local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (relaxing medications). During angioplasty a balloon tipped catheter is inserted through an artery in the groin, then sent to the arterial blockage, where the balloon is then inflated to expand the opening. This procedure itself may be sufficient to improve blood flow through the artery.

Sometimes angioplasty alone is sufficient and sometimes a stent is also required. A stent looks something like a spring. It is threaded through the vein and sent to the occlusion in a balloon catheter. After the balloon is inflated, the stent remains in place to reinforce the opened artery.
