Sestamibi Scanning
This test is used to detect diseased parathyroid glands. Sestamibi is a protein that is "marked" with radioactive dye (technetium99). This is a mild, safe radioactive agent that is injected into the veins of a patient with hyperparathyroidism (parathyroid disease) and is absorbed by the overactive parathyroid gland. Normal parathyroid glands are inactive when there is high calcium in the bloodstream and do not take up the radioactive particles. This test produces an image of the overactive gland.
The Sestamibi scan will display the hyperactive gland which is causing hyperparathyroidism in about 90 percent of patients. A positive Sestamibi is almost always correct (98-100%.)
To Prepare:
Wear comfortable clothes. You will probably be asked not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before except for a few sips of water if you need medications.
For one entire day prior to the test you will be required to abstain from caffeine and certain mediciations. Check the labels of foods and bevearages carfully because caffeine consumed before the test may invalidate the test results.
Medications you may need to stop before the test include some asthma medications and medicines for chest pain(angina); check wit your doctor. If you take insulin to control your blood sugar, ask your physician if or how much insulin you should take the day of your test.
During your Test:
It takes approximately two hours to perform the Sestamibi scan after it has been injected. Pictures of the neck and chest are usually taken immediately after the injection and again in after certain periods of time have elapsed. A newer technique called SPECT scanning (Single Proton Emission Computerized Tomography) allows even more complete two and three dimensional images to be obtained.
The results of your exam will be interpreted within 48 hours. They will be forwarded to your physician who will discuss the results with you and determine whether further testing is necessary.
