Persantine Stress Test

The Persantine Stress Test is used to evaluate the heart and coronary arteries. This particular form of stress test is typically used for patients who are unable to exercise to achieve their target heart rate. Instead, a medication, Persantine, is given to expand (dilate) the coronary arteries, similar to what happens during exercise. A radioactive tracer is also given to allow images of the heart muscle. This test is used to help your doctor determine whether your coronary arteries are blocked or narrowed as a result of coronary artery disease.

To prepare:

Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the test. If you are a diabetic, please speak with your physician about your insulin needs or possible need to change the time of diabetic medication prior to the test. Do not drink caffeine for 24 hours prior to the test and no decaf, tea, chocolate or soda.

Do not use tobacco products on the morning of the test.

You may take your medications with water the morning of the test. However, do not take any medications that include theophylline, aminophylline, theodur and slophylline for 36 hours prior to your test. You should discuss this with your physician prior to stopping this medication.

If you use an inhaler for breathing, please bring it with you.

During the test:

You will be given an intravenous injection of persantine.  the monitoring procedure itself is similar to that of a stress test as electrodes are placed on the chest, to monitor heart rate and rythym with the help of electrocardiogram (EKG).  A camera is used to take pictures of the heart. This test will take approximately 2 hours to complete.

Intake of Persantine may result in temporary headache and dizziness.

The results of yur exam will be interpreted within 48 hours.  They will be forwarded to your physician.  Your physician will decide whether or not further testing is necessary.
