Women & Heart Disease Risk

While women have some of the same risk factors for heart disease as men, other risk factors are uniquely feminine. Review this list to identify whether you are at risk for heart disease:

  • Smoking or daily exposure to secondhand smoke (at home or work)
  • Past heart attack or known coronary artery disease
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Elevated cholesterol (over 240 mg/dL or HDL less than 35 mg/dL)
  • Abnormal heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Vascular disease in neck (carotid) or leg (femoral) artery
  • Birth control pills (especially in combination with smoking)
  • Overweight
  • Post-menopausal (and not taking hormone replacement therapy)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
